Pictures of Our Mini Vacation

With my wife, Elizabeth, in graduate school full time and working part time, and with me working full time and in graduate school part time, we don’t really have much time to devote to relaxing, let alone a get-a-way. So this past weekend we decided to have our own little mini vacation right here in our city. After all, we do live in a beach city.

I used my free vacation day voucher to take Friday off. We checked into our Wyndham hotel Thursday night ($329/night during peak season – we got it for free through my work). The hotel is in the residential section of the Oceanfront (56th street for those of you familiar with the area), so it was quiet. Our room was on the fourth floor overlooking the beach.

We got up early enough on Friday for the sunrise (7:01 a.m. EST). Even though we stayed on our balcony, the pictures still turned out pretty good. Here is one pre-sunrise:The sunrise in full force:

The sun after about an hour:A little sailboat stored on the shore for the winter:After a free Chick-Fil-A breakfast (coupons), we went to the aquarium (also free thanks to passes we’ve had for a while). I love the sea turtles:The sharks were harder to get a good picture of, so none will be viewed here. Tthe otters are by far my favourite. I could watch them for hours. This particular one was swimming laps alone in his tank – the same pattern over and over. Every once in a while, he would get out and run in circles for about a minute straight and then get back in the water. His wife/brother/partner/friend was asleep outside. The others were in their little house (which might be heated).
We then went home for a quick nap/round of Mario Golf, and then went back to the Oceanfront for an early dinner (also free). We went to Bible study Friday night, and to a marriage therapy training seminar for ELizabeth all day Saturday. All in all, it was a great (though short) weekend of resting, catching up, and enjoying each other.

  1. just about. we left a tip for dinner Friday night in cash. oh – another free thing – we had two coupons for free chick-fil-a chicken biscuits, so we had an almost free breakfast, too (just paid for drinks).
